The Roadmap

  • Set up and build access.
  • Source and build suppliers.
  • Ship and restock winners.
  • Run the day and scale.
An eight-stage Amazon reselling roadmap from account setup through sourcing, shipping, restocking, daily tasks, and team growth.
Build the business one stage at a time instead of trying to master everything before your first sale.

An Amazon business has a lot of moving parts. That doesn't mean you need to learn all of them before you start.

You need a path. Get your account ready. Find products you can sell. Buy the right inventory. Get it shipped. Restock what works. Then build the team and systems to do more of it.

Here's your roadmap, with a practical next step at each stage.

Start with an account and products you can sell

1. Getting Started: Get ready for your first sale

Your goal: An Amazon account that's ready to make its first sale.

If you've done your research and decided to pursue reselling, this is your first move. Don't spend another month learning sourcing while your seller account still isn't set up.

Start registration now, then keep learning while you work through setup and verification. You don't need to know everything to take the first step. You do need an account before you can put those lessons to work.

Follow our step-by-step guide to opening your Amazon seller account.

Next step: Complete registration and check Seller Central for any remaining setup tasks.

2. Ungating: Stop checking products one at a time

Your goal: Access to more products instead of constantly hitting restrictions.

A lot of new sellers think they're gated in everything. They check a product. Restricted. Check another. Restricted again. After enough of that, it feels like Amazon has put a padlock on the entire store.

But checking a few products doesn't show you what your account can sell across a much larger catalog.

It's like trying to dig a well with a spoon. You can work all day and still feel like you're getting nowhere.

Use 3P Mercury Lead Finder to check in bulk instead. That's the excavator. One or two broad passes can give you a much better picture of where your account already has access.

  1. Open 3P Mercury Lead Finder.
  2. Click Catalog Builder.
  3. Run the search for your account.
  4. Give it time to finish, then come back and review the results.
  5. Look through the listings and brands your account is eligible to sell.

Select Catalog Builder on the left, then use Run Search to begin. The Auto Source controls are in the middle column for the sourcing step below.

You may uncover many listings and brands, depending on your account and search results. Start with a broad view instead of guessing from a handful of products.

Being eligible to sell a listing doesn't make it a good purchase. Check current restrictions, the product match, sourcing documentation, and profit before buying.

Next step: Build a catalog of what you can sell, then evaluate the opportunities inside it.

Build a sourcing pipeline and supplier relationships

3. Sourcing: Let bulk research do the first pass

Your goal: A steady pipeline of profitable opportunities without searching all day.

Sourcing one product at a time has its place. It helps you dig deeper, explore a brand, or work through a lead that needs a closer look. But it shouldn't be your default for every product.

Start with the work the system can do in bulk.

In Lead Finder, click Auto Source to begin finding leads with potential buying sources across your results. Let that first pass run. Review the opportunities it finds before manually sourcing the rest.

Instead of starting every search from scratch, you're reviewing a pipeline and spending your attention where it matters.

Auto Source finds candidates. You still decide what to buy after checking the supplier, listing match, costs, fees, demand, and margin.

Next step: Run Auto Source, review the results, and save manual research for leads that still need it.

4. Wholesale: Let sourcing lead to relationships

Your goal: Supplier relationships that can lead to repeatable inventory.

You don't have to force wholesale before you've learned how to evaluate a product.

As you start with online arbitrage, use the brands you're researching as a starting point. Call a brand to ask whether the website you're considering is an authorized reseller. Then ask who its authorized distributors are.

You're checking your source and learning where a longer-term supply relationship might begin.

Once you're approved for a distributor account and have its catalog, load it into 3P Mercury to find matching ASINs. Review the matches and numbers before ordering.

A distributor account isn't a guarantee of Amazon selling approval or profit. It's access to a potential source. You still need to check the details.

Watch the wholesale walkthrough.

Next step: Ask the brands you're researching about authorized sellers and distributors. Build relationships as opportunities appear.

Get inventory moving and keep the winners in stock

5. Shipping: Get your inventory out of the house

Your goal: Inventory moving into Amazon's warehouses and ready to sell.

If your FBA inventory is sitting at your location unshipped, it can't sell through Amazon's fulfillment network. Your money is tied up in a box.

Ship promptly so inventory can move toward check-in, availability, and sales. Shipping doesn't recover your investment by itself, but it gets the process moving.

Speed starts before the shipping label. If you keep rebuilding spreadsheets, re-entering product details, or trying to remember which order belongs to which shipment, you're adding delays you don't need.

This is where an integrated system matters. Keep purchasing, receiving, prep, and shipping connected so each stage doesn't start from zero. Move quickly while still doing the prep and checks Amazon requires.

Watch the shipping workflow.

Next step: Review inventory waiting to ship and remove the avoidable steps holding it up.

6. Restocking: Stack bricks instead of starting over

Your goal: Your best sellers staying in stock instead of missing sales.

Finding a good product takes work. When it sells, you have something worth reviewing for another purchase.

Restocking can be much easier than finding a new lead. You already have sales history and experience with the product. Use that information.

Think of it like collecting bricks. Each product that remains profitable and available becomes another brick you can keep building with. You don't want to throw the whole pile away and start looking for new bricks every week.

The bricks still need checking. Costs change. Competition changes. Sales slow down. Recheck the numbers and your cash position before reordering.

Make restocking a routine, not something you remember after your best seller runs out.

Watch the restocking walkthrough, or read how to restock Amazon inventory properly.

Next step: Review products approaching a stockout and decide what deserves another order.

Run the day, then build capacity

7. Daily Operations: Start at your command center

Your goal: More time back while your business keeps running.

This is where everything ties together. Open the Today page in 3P Mercury to see the work that needs your attention.

Think of it as your command center. Instead of jumping between screens trying to remember what matters, start with a plan for the day.

The A.I. system helps surface work such as restocking, reviewing buying opportunities, following up on purchase orders, and checking account health or inventory issues. You can also keep your own tasks here, including reminders to pay your team.

The Today page brings suggested actions and your own tasks into one view. Figures shown are from this example account.

In the screenshot, the priority is clear: review products running low and deal with aging purchase orders. Team-payment reminders and the buying budget sit alongside that work.

You still review recommendations and make decisions. The benefit is having the work in front of you instead of trying to keep the entire business in your head.

Next step: Open Today, work through the highest-priority items, and keep your recurring tasks there.

8. Scaling: Increase what the business can handle

Your goal: A clear path from your first sale to a business that can grow.

Once the process works, scaling means increasing your capacity to repeat it.

That usually comes down to three things:

  • People: A team member or partner who can own repeatable work.
  • Capital: More buying capacity, supported by cash flow and a repayment plan if you borrow.
  • Operations: The ability to order, receive, prep, and ship more inventory without creating a pileup.

You can build your own prep and shipping team. Or use one of our certified prep centers to take that physical work off your hands.

Inside 3P Mercury's shipping feature, you can contact our prep centers to discuss outsourcing. Ask about pricing, turnaround times, and the products they handle before choosing a fit.

More buying power won't help much if the boxes can't leave your building. Grow the parts of the business together.

Next step: Find the bottleneck. Add the person, process, or capacity that removes it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to learn sourcing before opening an Amazon seller account?

You can learn while you complete setup. If you've decided to pursue reselling, start the account process now so registration doesn't hold you back later.

Does Catalog Builder guarantee I can sell every result?

No. Eligibility depends on your account and can change. Review current restrictions and requirements before buying. Eligibility also doesn't guarantee profit.

Should I stop sourcing manually?

No. Use bulk research and Auto Source for the first pass, then use manual research to investigate further and work through the remaining opportunities.

Do I need to start with wholesale?

No. You can begin with online arbitrage and develop supplier relationships as you research brands and authorized sources.

When should I use a prep center?

Consider one when prep and shipping limit your ability to buy and sell, or when outsourcing fits your operating plan. Compare its costs and turnaround times with your margins and needs.
